Tokyo Xtreme Racer Lands On PS5 On 26 February

The unexpected revival of Tokyo Xtreme Racer has been one of our surprise gaming hits of the past year, a callback to a simpler, more focused era of racing games. So far, though, that fun has only been the preserve of PC gamers.
That won't be the case for long, though, as following the September announcement that it'd be heading to PlayStation 5, we now have a full release date for the first console version: 26 February 2026.

We shouldn’t be surprised that TXR is making the trip to PS5, given the series’ roots are firmly in PlayStation consoles. Long before 2025’s reboot of the series, several entries and spin-offs had found a regular and welcome home on the PS2, along with the Sega Dreamcast and some mobile titles.
A reboot of a series that had been dormant for the best part of two decades, Tokyo Xtreme Racer pretty much does what it says on the tin. It sees you engage in nocturnal one-on-one races on Tokyo's Shuto Expressway, a network of urban highways criss-crossing Japan's capital, in gameplay inspired by the antics of real-life street racing collectives like the Mid Night Club (related in name only to the sadly dormant Rockstar Games franchise). The game features a healthy car roster, all from Japanese brands for now, with each car highly customisable.

Fittingly for a game with an admittedly narrow scope, the PS5 version of TXR is priced towards the cheaper end of the modern video game scale, costing £39.99 ($49.99/€49.99). It's digital-only for most of the world, although Japan will get a physical release, and those who pre-order on PS5 will get an unspecified 'special item' for doing so.
There's no word yet on a version for Xbox platforms, or indeed the Switch 2, but at least TXR's unique approach to modern racing games will soon be opened up to a wider audience.
