The Legendary V12-Powered Top Secret Toyota Supra Is Being Auctioned

The 1GZ-powered Supra that gained infamy for a 197mph run on a British motorway in the 90s is up for grabs

It’s a fair assumption that there are more modified Mk4 Supras out there than surviving stock examples. With that in mind, it takes something quite special to stand out from the herd, which is what this ‘Top Secret’ Mk4 does for two reasons: what’s been done to it, and its reputation.

Firstly, let’s deal with the “what’s been done to it” angle. Under the bonnet, you’ll find the 5.0-litre ‘1GZ-FE’ engine from the Toyota Century. Yep, Japan’s sole production V12. There’s not much of the original engine left though, and with some serious added boost via a pair of HKS GT 2835 turbochargers, it makes well over 1000bhp.

Now we’ll deal with the ‘reputation’ bit. Kazuhiko ‘Smokey’ Nagata - the founder of Top Secret, who very much lives up to his nickname - brought the car to the UK in 1999, where he thought he’d see how fast he could get it. At 4am. On the A1M motorway.

The aim was 200mph, and thanks to wet conditions Smokey fell short, but only just - he still managed 197mph. Shortly after he was pulled over by the police, who understandably took a dim view of the early-morning high-speed run. Nagata was arrested and swiftly deported.

So it’s a seriously fast, highly unique car with one hell of a back-story. And if you’ve the cash, you could own it: it’s up for auction in Japan next month. It looks a little different than it did during the infamous A1M run thanks to the fitting of Top Secret’s ‘Super G Force’ high speed lift-killing bodykit, which it used to great effect in 2008 on the Nardo Ring when it clocked 222.6mph. Just in case the car didn’t already have the history box well and truly ticked.

We’re intrigued to see what it’ll go for…

I’m curious as to why he came here to drive on the A1M? He could of gone America where they have some insanely long straight dry roads ? Without any police in sight ?

During the a1 run it was a Rb26DETT swapped and was producing 850+hp and as far as I know the original one was sold. This is a different Supra built from scratch and made its way of winning 2005 Tokyo Auto Salon and thrashing the nardo ring with 378kmph.
This Supra is a legendary one as it has been seen repeatedly braking speed limits at wangan highway and has been featured in numerous magazines and most particularly in Video option.

Isnt that Smokey Nagatas car that did 200mph (or attempted to) on the M25, wasnt that car thrown out with Smokey out of the UK when the police caught him…..

Now try and imagine Smokey Nagata doing 200mph in Switzerland, they would have a huge fit and ban all Japanese cars in a nanosecond!

Its depressing to know that this will fall into the wrong hands, and won’t have another mile on its clock.
