This Horrific Pile-Up Shows The Dangers Of Speeding In Foggy Conditions

This onboard video from Slovenia is proof that if you speed in the fog, you're gonna have a bad time...

The video’s description - provided by the Associated Press - sheds some light on this terrifying pile-up:

“A massive pileup involving dozens of cars and trucks in dense fog killed four people on Saturday and injured 30 on a highway in western Slovenia, police said.

The accident took place on a key motorway connecting the capital of Ljubljana with the Adriatic coast. The area was wrapped in thick fog and police say this was the likely cause of the pileup.

Eyewitness photos published by local online media showed dozens of crumpled cars, some of them lodged under trucks. Police said some 70 various vehicles were caught in the crash near Senozece, some 70 kilometers (42 miles) southwest of Ljubljana.

The motorway remained closed for traffic as emergency crews, firefighters and police struggled to provide help and clear the scene.

State STA news agency said the pileup was one of the biggest ever in the small EU country.”

It can be all too easy to push on in dodgy conditions, something I’m sure we’ve all done at one time or another. But this video is a clear reminder that very few people actually drive to the prevailing conditions. Ultimately, if your visibility is reduced to a matter of feet, you can’t expect to maintain your normal cruising speed safely.

Stay safe CTzens.

I feel sick watching this, you never learn what to do in situations like this like it took a while for everyone to get out of their cars to the side of the road. As petrol heads I think we would all know to get to the side as quick as possible but non car guys will have no clue

I have absolutely no sympathy for the drivers that crashed whatsoever. if you can only see 20 feet in front of you then drive slow enough that you can stop within 20 feet, its not rocket science. they should be charged with death by dangerous driving

Fog is really bad factor when driving, and even worse when people drive like there is no fog and the road is not wet. Interesting how here (i’m actually in Rijeka, Croatia), it’s really foggy and raining for about a week but no crashes at all. Even if they happend, it’s a car or two without casualties. Please be really careful in this foggy weather, nobody wants to get in a crash !

Why didn’t those people go further down where cars have already crashed, would be much safer.

…and the crash would be much bigger, if some guys didn’t go out, risk their lives, run towards passing cars and wave to stop down. They saved many lives. The ones who stopped because of waving guys, said that if those guys wouldn’t wave, they would deffinately crash. Pile up would be much bigger, with more than 100 cars involved and many more lives shut down.
So all the respect to these guys.

Every time I see videos like this, I always wonder why no one is running down the side of the road to warn the drivers. If the someone from the first couple of vehicles would make an effort to slow down the oncoming vehicles, it could keep it from becoming a pile up.

As well as driving slower in these conditions, people should remember to use their rear fog lights.

This is precisely why I’ve got selective yellow fog lights and high beams. ;)
